Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on The Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Take Me Home” by Blis. from the 2017 album No One Loves You, out October 6th on Sargent House.

They ignited a spark with their EP Starting Fires In My Parents House, and now with their debut full-length No One Loves You, Blis. will set off a blaze. The Atlanta rockers expand on their post-hardcore sound while unveiling the personal life of frontman Aaron Gossett. During the time between the EP and the LP, Gossett had a child with his longtime girlfriend. In an interview with Off Tha Record, he reveals, “…I had a kid, and that was a good two years off before I could re-enter the music game again. I think the record is riddled with that and the tumultuous relationship me and Atticus’ [Aaron’s son] mom have together, so it’s kind of themed around that. There’s also a lot of religious themes on the record. There was a lot of issues that happened between her and I during that period from when she found out she was pregnant; her parents weren’t okay with it because of their Christian upbringing, her dad is a pastor, and so that was like, the LAST thing they wanted to hear, and obviously they didn’t give me a lot of respect in that situation…so that pretty much sums up every topic on the album!”

Today’s Song of the Day, in particular, explores that theme with Gossett’s impassioned wail and the refrain “Mommy’s gonna pick me up and take me home.” The video, directed by Alex Henery, drives it home, and it even appears that Atticus makes a cameo in the clip.

Blis. are heading out on a North American tour in October. No Seattle date on the itinerary yet, but follow the band on Facebook and Twitter for the latest news.
