"Delighted to have new music in the Dior SS2023 show, with choreography by greats Imre and Marne van Opstal of Nederlands Dans Theater fame, at the historic Jardin des Tuileries. Many thanks to designer Maria Grazia Chiuri and to music supervisors Michel Gaubert and Ryan Aguilar.

I was thrilled to have been able to enlist the talents of people dear to me to bring these new ideas to life. Many thanks to @sarahdavachi @amhmll @alexmaax @mattcohenmusic

The new track that opens the show, was a collaboration centered around the stunning harpsichord of the magnificent Sarah Davachi. Thank you @sarahdavachi for trusting me to weave together a song from the fabric of your greatness.

The fourth track of the show, nestled between legendaries Bjork and Perfume Genius came to fruition because a dear friend and artist understood what I meant when i said “Renaissance rave” and “the sound of an octopus crawling on land for the first time” and tbh everybody needs a talented cohort who understands such important terms. - via @Ioannagika

Welcome to this 10th episode of the Dior Talks podcast ‘Feminist Art’. This series explores the connections between Creative Director of Women’s collections Maria Grazia Chiuri, and contemporary women artists and curators.

In this episode, series host Katy Hessel, a London-based curator, writer and art-historian, speaks with musical artist Ioanna Gika, the Greek-American musical artist who performed at the Cruise 2022 show held in Athens, on the evening of June 17, 2021.

Ioanna Gika was born in Washington D.C. She spent her childhood between Greece and the United States, returning to live at her mother’s Greek home after her father’s death, when she started to write her first album, “Thalassa” (“Sea”) about her life and homeland. She is based in Los Angeles where, in 2009, she founded the band Io Echo with Leopold Ross. They released their debut album in 2013 and have supported Nine Inch Nails, Garbage and Florence + the Machine amongst others. They have performed at the Coachella and Lollapalooza festivals, and Gika has written and performed for movies and television consistently since 2012.

Having already performed at the Cruise 2018 show in Los Angeles, Maria Grazia Chiuri was delighted to invite her to collaborate with the House again. On the night, with a live orchestra and multimedia accompaniments, she recited a poem that reflected her roots in Greece and her rich, powerful voice resonated through the Panathenaic Stadium, the first stone of which was laid over 2500 years ago. She talks about this electrifying experience and the feeling of connection to the past which she felt as she performed. Having toured and sung widely around the world, she notes how unique and different this occasion was and how profoundly she seemed to be grounded in the moment. The monumental location itself possesses a huge significance. Constructed in white marble, it was a primary setting for the first modern Olympic Games. Its length symbolizes an ancient unit of measurement and, crucially for both the singer and Maria Grazia Chiuri, it was the first place in Classical Greece where women could freely appear and socialize in public.

Ioanna Gika reflects on notions of the word ‘race’ – the human race, the race against time, to participate in a race. The conjunction of these meanings in the stadium created a poignant combination of symbols and thoughts for her. She goes on to consider the personal and social significance of clothes, both in general and also the creations in the collection and the remarkable outfit specially designed for her. Like Maria Grazia Chiuri, she is inspired by the colors of Greece, by the use of blue and all the historical and mystical connotations which accompany it. She also weaves a beautiful connection between the visual sensations of fashion and womanhood and the sensory streams of consciousness so prevalent in her own music.
Sargent Housetag:sargenthouse.com,2005:Post/66633562021-06-18T07:50:32-07:002021-06-20T11:48:45-07:00IOANNA GIKA PERFORMED THE LIVE SCORE FOR DIOR CRUISE SHOW 2022
Watch the Dior Cruise Show 2022 stream with the live performance by Ioanna Gika.

Ioanna has a generous humanitarian side as well, sharing that all of the proceeds of Devendra Banhart’s cover of her track “Swan” go to the Downtown Women’s Shelter in Los Angeles.

Statements from Devendra and Ioanna below:

From Devendra Banhart: “I admire and respect Ioanna immensely , one of the great singers , poets , composers & performers of our time , really an otherworldly kind of creature/being , I love her and I love this song so much , It’s so very rare to meet someone you aren’t quite convinced is from this planet…. There I was , listening for the first time , totally drawn into this twilight crystal moon world that her voice immediately evokes , and the chorus comes in : “Let me hear the swan sing / Melody of mourning / Sweeter than the silent / Exit without warning” My heart broke hearing that …. What a beautiful stanza, endless knot of longing , wow…… it was an honor to totally ruin this amazing song!”

Ioanna Gika adds: “It is a pleasure to hear the song through Devendra’s distinct voice and vision. He is not only a prodigious artist, but one whom I have always appreciated for the way that he fosters community. Together, we have decided that we would like all proceeds from this cover to go to the Downtown Women’s Center in Los Angeles. Providing housing, healthcare, and assistance, the DWC is an important organization and one that is meaningful to us both.”
Sargent Housetag:sargenthouse.com,2005:Post/60359672019-12-20T11:08:05-08:002019-12-20T15:04:41-08:00"One Thing Leads to Another" Cover on Revolver's 6 Best New Songs

There is something witchy and transformative about her music which has been easily captivating to new audiences. The music bares something traditional while bridging into soft techno undertones that has created such a strong narrative for those who balance the moods of raving and meditating.

Her album Thalassa, released earlier this year, is an amalgamation of the conflicting feelings she had experienced while going through a break up as well as coping with familial sorrows. Taking refuge in Greece to write the album, the musician took to her Greek mother-tongue as well as English to construct her poems which were amplified through her vocals which evoke spirits of sirens songs. Hey lyrics have even been quoted by Booker Prize winner Arundhati Roy in her best-selling book The Ministry Of Utmost Happiness. These unified layers of complexities pared with previous collaborations with electronic maven and Grammy nominated TOKiMONSTA can be heard throughout as the album slips and slides through the varying emotional extremities.

Review via New Noise Magazine

Thalassa is the debut album from Ioanna Gika, a Greek American musician signed to Sargent House. Formerly of Io Echo, Gika has spoken about how “Thalassa is about going through change that is unwanted yet unstoppable.” Gika conveys that musically by combining classical tones with cool, dark, and modern electronic moods. Thalassa means “spirit of the sea” in Greek, and like the ocean, there is a lusciousness to this breathtaking album.

“Roseatte” opens with a luscious harp shimmering like the wine dark sea. With baroque vocals, Ioanna Gika sings, “Goodbye, in waves the message rang through the sea.” The song takes on a heavy and dramatic tone with gothic beats and industrial electronic elements. With theatrical vocals, Gika sings, “these city walls our fathers built they have crumbled now but I can’t let go.” Lyrically and musically, “Roseatte” affectingly conveys the struggle of coping with change while honoring roots to the past. “Roseatte” is a deeply passionate and emotionally empowering song, with maximalist singing and melodies that crash like waves before retreating back to the ocean.

“Out of Focus” is an airy song, with haunting synths blended ethereally with chilling vocals. It’s like being inside a dream with its own logic. The pulsing beats create a mosaic of ghostly and haunting rhythms. Gika sings about “holding on to history,” repeating the lyrics, “there was nothing to do, nothing to do.”

Thalassa by Ioanna Gika

“Thalassa” feels otherworldly. Like a creation myth that reinvents itself for modernity, “Thalassa” is grounded in classical sensibilities yet colored by futuristic rattles, drone, and noise. Echoing harp and glistening synths convey a sense of wonder and radiance through delicate melodies. Once “Thalassa” ends, “Messenger” begins with a drum and bass vibe that is poppy and fun. “Messenger” is a fast song with plucky, uppity, and energetic strings. There are also some incredibly lovely vocal cries and chants, with a rapid piano and fast strings towards the exhilarating end.

“Swan,” is a slow and icy lament, with frosty keys and atmospheric instrumentation. To the sound of wistful synths and faraway ambience, Gika sings mournfully, “I can touch you, but I can’t hold on, let me hear the swan sing.” Gika has stated that she wrote “Swan” towards the end of a relationship. “I could sense change,” she said, “but was met with silence.” Gika added, “Hearing the truth is harsh, but silence, when you’re looking for answers, is a suffocating purgatory.” As far as translating artistic intent into music, Gika successfully transforms silence and suffocation into beautiful, deep, and meaningful sound. If looking for answers through silence is a Purgatory, than Ioanna Gika has transformed hers into something beautiful and understandable.

The deep keys and mellow atmosphere on “Weathervane” serenade the void. Elegiac synths intertwined with choir like vocals give this song a spacey and cosmic vibe. On “Weathervane,” Gika asks, “did I love you too much or not enough?” The instrumentation towards the end creates an atmosphere that is chillingly beautiful. “New Geometry” is a spirited song with inspired strings, stimulating beats, and exceptional back up singing. Gika sings, “I found the answer in your hesitation.” The lively drumming, fuzzy bass, and gentle guitar towards the end offer surprising variation that heighten the musical complexity and tension explored on Thalassa.

Gika’s vocals have a lulling effect in the beginning of “No Matter What.” When she sings softly, “don’t fall asleep in silence,” her cool and calming vocals fuse with stunning and elegant strings. The synths make this song uplifting and triumphant. “Ammonite” is very maximalist and post-punk towards the beginning. The song opens with symphonic strings and intense, gothic singing. Painted with dramatic and dark electronic beats, this synth pop song ends surprisingly, with melodic piano, and watery, doubled singing.

“Drifting” is dazzling with the lavish piano, rich synths, and luxuriant keys. Like a little poem that gives off warmth and light through verse, the lyrics in “Drifting” are touching through powerful and heartfelt imagery. “Don’t go drifting too far from the shore,” Gika implores, “if I lose you will I lose myself?” For an album focused on impermanence, here comes a song that resists change. There is a profound and impassioned yearning that is captivating and beautiful, one that encapsulates the feeling of Thalassa with levity and grace.

Thalassa is a groundbreaking and innovative achievement worth listening to on repeat. Ioanna Gika has said that Thalassa “is a document of the dread, the adrenaline, and the surrender in the moments when you realize the only way to survive is to brace yourself and go through.” That feels more than earned on Thalassa, an inventive and revolutionary record. With Thalassa, Ioanna Gika triumphs over loss with a towering and staggering debut that resonates long after this stunning album finishes playing.

In the wake of the deaths of her father and stepfather, and the dissolution of a long-term relationship, the former member of Io Echo traveled to her family’s home country of Greece, where she witnessed its now-decade-long spiral into economic ruin and corruption firsthand. She emerged with an art-pop odyssey of gothic elegance and profound searching: for clarity, for solidity, for a way forward, like a balm amid crisis.

On Thalassa’s highlight, “Roseate,” Gika pivots between featherlight, almost medieval balladeering and concrete resolve. Beats rise and crash like the ocean; Gika’s rhythms, skittering and sprinting, reflect the mercurial nature of life itself. Against this churn, Gika eloquently sings of upheaval, of a crumbling city: “Went inland but saw statues fall / Reshaping the golden dawn,” she intones, an indictment of Greece’s neo-fascist Golden Dawn party. Gika’s political invocations are subtly-stated but deeply felt, like on the rattling “Messenger,” where she addresses Greece’s period of austerity and debt in personal terms. “No more pension for mother or my stepdad,” she sings soberly.

At times, Thalassa contains hints of Björk, or the music that Nandi Rose Plunkett currently makes as Half Waif. Gika has also opened for heavier artists, such as Deafheaven and Nine Inch Nails, with whom she shares a blackened grandeur and an intensity of spirit. But her production, morose as it is, breathes in a way that feels generous and rare. Thalassa means sea in Greek. Gika’s music, well acquainted with vast unknowns, shows that one cannot find an anchor without braving the waves.
Sargent Housetag:sargenthouse.com,2005:Post/57089752019-04-05T14:30:57-07:002019-04-05T14:33:03-07:00'Thalassa' Album Review // The FADER

One of the most interesting trends in modern heavy music is the acceptance of a style that, on the surface, sometimes has very little in common with metal. At one end of this rather vast spectrum are the more obviously metallic stylings of Chelsea Wolfe, and at the other is Greek-American artist Ioanna Gika, whose compositions are intense but electronically driven. Perhaps the likes of Wolfe, Gika, Anna von Hausswolff, Emma Ruth Rundle and Louise Lemón appear at metal festivals, release on metal labels and receive support from metal publications because listeners have begun to realise that heaviness doesn’t have to stem solely from roaring riffs and vicious vocals – it can also be in the sheer scope or deep-seated poignancy of a piece of music. In truth, the elegiac music Gika is responsible for might be a step too far for many riff patrons, but those who turn their attention elsewhere as soon as the electronics kick in will be missing out, for the Sargent House artist sets herself apart on her debut solo album with a style that’s vast, captivating and powerful.

Gika’s vocal performance is key throughout. Presented stark, her voice has a natural elegance that resonates through the album, shining down from some celestial plane; a beam of light soaring over the dense and often menacing music that lies beneath. The album is so vast that it’s easy to find yourself lost within its supernatural charm, but with vocals that are a commanding combination of alluring power, mournful disquiet and expressive serenity, Thalassa’s humanity is also front and present. Inspired in part by familial loss and romantic setbacks as well as the forced change they bring, the album’s personal themes can be heard throughout. They are there in the funereal atmospherics and looming beat of ‘No Matter What’ and the downhearted tones of ‘Weathervane’, but most notably they are what we are left with on the forlorn loneliness of closer ‘Drifting’.

The album is not merely a lament, though. It takes the grief-filled misfortunes of life as a wave – something you are plunged into and must fight lest it overpower you. The album’s title pays reference to the primeval spirit of the sea, and it’s clear that this inspiration burrows deep into the songwriting itself. Each sonic idea is its own musing that comes and goes like a wave, their impact felt even after they’ve faded away to be replaced by another. Like the ocean itself, the music is capable of both intense beauty and fierce strength, something that’s evident as early as opener ‘Roseate’, which begins tearful but also graceful before taking a plunge into a darker realm driven by an ominous beat and haunting atmospherics.

This imposing facet of the music is seemingly inspired by real-world experience, and it’s capable of reaching overwhelming levels of stifling claustrophobia. Yet Thalassa also holds an enchanting allure, one that radiates from Gika’s inherently sumptuous vocals and the occasional uplifting instrumental swells, injecting a smattering of hope into proceedings like the faint light of the surface above as you sink into the depths.

On her new song, the Greek-American singer channels the dreamy melodies of Mazzy Star with bursts of shimmering synths and Gika’s haunting vocals.

“‘Swan’ is about the sinking feeling when you sense a relationship is coming to an end, but you are powerless to stop it,” Gika explains in a statement. “You exist in this nebulous state, and can sense the change, but are met with silence. Hearing the truth is harsh, but silence, when you’re looking for answers, is a suffocating purgatory.”

"Greek-American songwriter Ioanna Gika will be releasing her self-produced debut album Thalassa on April 5th via Sargent House, and has today shared a devastating new single 'Swan'. Speaking on the track she says:

"‘Swan’ is about the sinking feeling when you sense a relationship is coming to an end, but you are powerless to stop it... You exist in this nebulous state, and can sense the change, but are met with silence. I had this feeling right before my long-term relationship ended, I had this feeling when my dad was sick but doctors weren’t getting back to me with answers. Hearing the truth is harsh, but silence, when you’re looking for answers, is a suffocating purgatory."

In the track, Gika takes the idea of a "swan song" and blows it up to dramatic and engulfing proportions. A truly stunning and overwhelming track, 'Swan' has the ability to take you inside the singer's fluttering and unstable moods and deliver a powerful dose of humanity; the longing, the insecurity - and the ever-present love and beauty despite it all."

Ioanna Gika is a Greek-American singer songwriter that has been floating in the ether for a little while now as a member of IO Echo and playing shows with the likes of DIIV and Deafheaven. She has now been signed to Sargent House for the release of her debut solo album Thalassa, which will come out on April 5th.

Speaking on the inspiration for Thalassa, Ioanna Gika says:
“A series of deaths drew me home to Greece. The city of my childhood memories was in disrepair. I drove past painted swastikas towards burial sites. I said goodbyes and grieved for those I didn’t get to say goodbye to. Thalassa is about going through change that is unwanted yet unstoppable. It is a document of the dread, the adrenaline, and the surrender in the moments when you realize the only way to survive is to brace yourself and go through.”

In new single ‘Out of Focus’ we feel pulled into the body of Gika as she moves among her homeland, surrounded by despair and disrepair on all sides. Walls of tension-filled strings and synths rise up on either side, threatening to collapse in on Gika. 'Out of Focus’ never reaches a true crescendo, but the tension certainly rises palpably, giving the song a thrilling feeling of claustrophobia, but from within Gika remains strong, her voice radiating out from within her hardened soul. Moving through 'Out of Focus’ we can see and feel Gika’s grief, but deeper than that is also a beauty that speaks to the transience of life and hope of new beginnings just around the corner.

The video for 'Out of Focus’ conceptualises things even further, with world surf champion Jake Caster as the Greek god Pan, surfing battering waves while Ioanna Gika is singing right alongside him.

For our annual Artist Survey we emailed the same set of questions to musicians about the midterm elections, the Supreme Court confirmation hearings of Brett Kavanaugh, Kanye West visiting the White House, the #MeToo movement a year later, mental health conditions in the music industry, whether or not they have Flossed, childhood birthday parties and vacations, which Muppets character they are most like, whether or not they are going to The Good Place after death, and much more.

What was the highlight of 2018 for either you personally or for the band?

A highlight was releasing my first single and going on tour with Deafheaven.

Despite compelling testimony from Christine Blasey Ford and sexual assault allegations from other women, Brett Kavanaugh was sworn in a Supreme Court Justice and many Republican women didn’t believe Ford’s story. What does this tell you about the general state of the #MeToo movement in 2018?

Humans are allowed to believe whatever they want, but the patriarchy is so deeply entrenched, that until years of archaic structures are disassembled, there will still be people who are incognizant of their own participation in it.

Be honest, did you Floss in 2018? (Meaning the dance craze, not the dental care.)

No.

Are you ready for artificial intelligence and a more automated future? Some predict that it may come sooner than we think and will lead to massive job losses.

Couldn’t be more ready. My Roomba could run our government more efficiently and compassionately than our current administration.

What’s your favorite birthday party memory from childhood?

Standing in a courtyard in Greece holding a small necklace I was just given, closing my eyes and feeling the wind of the Aegean Sea on my face. I had just turned seven. For some reason that memory stuck with me.

What’s been your most surreal experience in the music industry?

This past Thanksgiving, Bono told me that he loves my new single. Didn’t see that coming.

When you die, do you think you’re going to the Good Place or the Bad Place?

Both. #QuantumMechanics

Tell us about your first job. Also, what’s been your most disastrous job interview or business meeting?

I started babysitting around the age of 10. I have supported myself financially since I was a teenager with a million odd jobs. As a result of not having a net to fall back on, my work ethic will never leave.

Where do you stand on social media in 2018, is it uniting humanity or ruining the world? And which platform do you find most useful and which one do you think is doing the most harm?

Milan Kundera said that optimism is the opium of the people. I also think it’s social media. I’ve watched it sedate humans into countless miles of scrolling. That said, you can swiftly organize a protest on social media, so it’s not all ruination.

This year The Doctor in Doctor Who was played by a woman for the first time in the show’s 55-year history. Which other established character would you like to see switch genders?

The President of the United States.

The opening, lilting guitars of “Roseate,” the first single from Greek-American singer Ioanna Gika’s upcoming debut solo LP of the same name, may make you wonder why she’s on tour with beloved indie metal group Deafheaven. “Goodbye / In waves the message rang through the sea,” Gika sings in a half-coo, half-lament. “The pelicans froze in the air, they saw what was no longer there.” It’s borderline folky, though hardly a harbinger of what’s to come.

Like the music of her tourmates, the song builds in emotional intensity, albeit with programmed drums and dark synths that sound like My Brightest Diamond writing a Suicide song. As “Roseate” crescendos into a chugging, panic-inducing sonic 180 from its opening chords, the tension Gika creates isn’t just palpable; it makes you want a cigarette and someone to hug. It’s the musical equivalent of the initial descent of a roller coaster; that paradoxical rush of ecstasy and dread where you want to get off and fly down the track at the same time.

Gika, best known as one-half of Los Angeles indie-rock duo Io Echo, begins her tour with DIIV and Deafheaven October 19th at Pappy and Harriet’s in Pioneertown, CA through a Halloween date at Jersey City, NJ’s White Eagle Hall.
