On this episode of the True Tunes Podcast, John J. Thompson sits down with Edwards in front of a live audience at the Audiofeed Festival in Champaign, Illinois to talk about his origins, his musical concepts, and his mystical perspectives on everything from the nature of art and humanity to the essence of spirituality and redemption.

PROPER.

Wovenhand – Silver Sash (Glitterhouse) – There’s a dark brooding drive to the latest Wovenhand album, maybe if Scott Walker had taken on a (not so obvious) brand of slightly alternative hard rock? There’s a warm way with words here, Silver Sash is a little more than the background music that most things ultimately are, this is a rich album, an album that makes demands of the listener, the words crave your attention as does the warm music – evocative lyrics painting the scene – “galloping across the dry grass fields on a horse into the white bark forest”. This is a full bodied sound rather than a heavy one – dense, detailed – feel the thickness of that sound, admire the way they’ve cut their rich musical cloth.

“Wovenhand is the musical project of enigmatic American singer-songwriter and guitarist David Eugene Edwards, formerly the front-man of 16 Horsepower. Silver Sash is his latest album due for release on 4th February 2022 via Glitterhouse. Silver Sash was created in collaboration with Chuck French of legendary American (post) hardcore outfit Planes Mistaken For Stars. Silver Sash follows the acclaimed Wovenhand albums Refractory Obdurate (2014) and Star Treatment (2016). Silver Sash was composed, recorded and produced in their homes in Denver by David and Chuck, along with engineer Jason Begin”.

Silver Sash sounds big, it sounds accomplished, more importantly, Silver Sash sounds different, if comparisons must be made then the aforementioned Scott Walker, a hint of Nick Cave, a far more dense Echo and The Bunnymen messing with the more adventurous side of Celtic Frost maybe? Nothing like any of that through, the richness of Michael J Sheehy, of Swans, of Gallon Drunk. David Eugene Edwards has a warm voice, a big voice, his words are alive with dark colour, they work so so well within the composition, within the whole of these pieces. Dead Dead Beat is heavy, formidably so – so much depth here – digging a hole to the pit of our souls – this is a collection of brooding atmospheres, proper songs, a proper album, a full-bodied richly detailed that reveals more of those secrets with every listen. Everything about Silver Sash feels big, ambitious, a group of musicians needing the challenging themselves – this is a painterly album, thick layers of oil paint rather than the rush of an acrylic-laden brush, evocative, a proper proper rock album and a body of work that demands you take it all in at once rather than bites of it grabbed off some streaming platform or other – a proper album that needs holding, studying, admiring. Proper. (sw)

On Friday, Nick Cave and his Bad Seeds will release their new album Skeleton Tree, and other than the soul-wrecking first single “Jesus Alone,” I haven’t heard it yet. Nobody has. Cave’s label has sent out no advances, which means music critics like me are tingling with anticipation just like everybody else. This is Cave’s first album since his son fell off a cliff and died last year. Cave is an artist with a long, storied history of staring deeply into the darkest parts of the human experience, of drinking that darkness in and spitting it back out all over us. The fact that he’s back to recording music so soon after such a life-reshaping personal catastrophe is a miraculous testament to his own strength. Even before hearing the album, I can feel the weight of its presence. It’s out there, waiting. And in a few days, it will be stomping all over my soul. But now, there is a chance, however slight, that Skeleton Tree will not be the best Nick Cave album that comes out on Friday.

I’m being glib here, of course. Star Treatment, the new Wovenhand album, is not a Nick Cave album. It’s not fair to Cave to imply that it is. It’s also not fair to David Eugene Edwards, the Denver musician who has been leading Wovenhand since 2001, since it was a side project of his mutant-country band 16 Horsepower. But Edwards has been treading some of the same territory as Cave for a long time now. His music deals in the same darkness, the same obsessiveness. His songs are steeped in the history of American music, of folk and country and blues, and yet they owe as much to some of the clanging, confrontational forms that followed: punk, metal, hardcore, noise-rock. His songs sound like incantations, like prayers bubbling up from below. He’s not Cave, but he’s cut from the same cloth.

I’d been shamefully ignorant of Edwards’ work until Converge frontman Jacob Bannon’s label Deathwish, Inc. put out Wovenhand’s album Refractory Obdurate two years ago. Deathwish is usually an amazing source of coloring-outside-the-lines hardcore and metal, and I have a policy that I’ll listen to anything that label puts out at least once. Edwards’ clanging, crashing sermons are as much alt-country as they are metal, but he fit weirdly well into the label’s whole project. Wovenhand’s sonics only glancingly intersect with metal, but they conjure a grandeur that we can also hear in some of the best doom. With the new Star Treatment, Wovenhand have left Deathwish for the more amorphous indie Sargent House, but they might be more metal than they were last time out. Opener “Come Brave” has a grand, seething distorto-riff at its heart. The thundering groove of “Crook And Flail” might have pianos and bongos mixed in, but those instruments somehow add to its heaving enormity; they don’t just ornament it. “Golden Blossom” is one of the quieter moments here, but the warmth of its stargazing psychedelia feels like the dank-club equivalent of a lighters-up arena moment.

This time around, Edwards is drawing plenty of his help from the intersecting worlds of metal and hardcore. Two of the musicians from his band are also members of Planes Mistaken For Stars, the reactivated Midwestern post-hardcore greats. Sanford Parker, the renowned Chicago metal producer, recorded the album, and he did it at Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio studio. But this isn’t Edwards’ punk album — at least, not any more than any of his others. Edwards is concerned with older things. He’s said that he named the album Star Treatment because he’s using it to explore humanity’s ancient fascination with the night sky. And in Star Treatment, we can hear the sounds of tiny human specks attempting to wrap minds around the infinite, around forces much grander than themselves. Edwards is a devout Christian, and that’s probably a part of it, too. There’s a ritualistic feel to the album, a sense of devotion to the cosmos. And even if you’re not the tiniest bit spiritual, which I’m not, there is a power in asking the mere questions that so many belief systems attempt to answer.

Edwards belongs to an older breed. He’s in there with Cave, Michael Gira, Carla Bozulich, Dan Higgs, Polly Jean Harvey, David Tibet. He’s a mystic wanderer, the type who seeks transcendence in darkness as well as in light. He never hides his voice. It’s a huge, barreling wail, a declamatory roar. And the music matches the majesty of that voice, calling on traditions that can sometimes go past ancestral country music and into tribal-chant territory. This is big music, a type of music that we don’t often hear anymore. It’s music for calling down heaven. There is plenty of great music coming out these days, but very little of it is concerned with summoning spirits in that same way. We don’t get many albums like this anymore. And if we end up getting two next week, we should feel fortunate indeed. We already got one.

What started with 16 Horsepower during the rising “Denver Sound” of the mid-90’s, took on a wider palette and evolved into the more personal Wovenhand. The Denver native also filters this sound through his less-than-conventional world view. The son of a reckless biker and a fundamentalist family, Edwards is an unapologetic, old world Christian with an untamable edge. Working within a darker musical paradigm, this dynamic plays out in mysterious ways as nothing is held back. By laying it all out and letting the pieces fall where they may, the resulting music becomes a sincere blend of Biblical allegory, heavy riffs, ethereal folk, Native American aesthetics, and musical flavors from every corner of the globe.

With the new album Star Treatment on the horizon, Edwards and his band of heavy music veterans—guitarist Chuck French and bassist Neil Keener (both of Planes Mistaken For Stars), drummer Ordy Garrison, and piano/synth player Matthew Smith of Crime & The City Solution—have crafted the hardest-hitting Wovenhand offering to date. The progression towards a heavier and more powerful sound has established them as recognizable figures in the dark underground, reaching as far as rock and metal festivals across Europe and the USA. Onstage, a figure in possessed rapture leads a rock n roll procession somewhere between fire 'n' brimstone and a shamanic ritual.

Match that with the presence of American metal luminary Sanford Parker at the production helm in Steve Albini’s legendary Electrical Audio studio, and you have a sound that attracts plaid-shirted good old boys and church-burning misanthropes alike. Beyond the admirable sincerity and devotion, the record is full of emotive hooks, thundering percussion, psychedelic twang, ethnic rhythms, and formless meditations on what mysteries reside in the heavens above. Edwards’ musical palette has truly become limitless, and Star Treatment takes Wovenhand’s sound to its most realized and accomplished.

Our discussion below attempts to explore some of these forces working beneath the surface. With such a unique perspective as his, Edwards unflinchingly reveals a few of his spiritual inclinations, his distrust of modernity, and finding a home for a sound caught in the sonic middle of it all. Sparing the finer elements of production and arrangement, the details of Star Treatmentare revealed in symbol and intention. The album is streaming below, so listen to it sing as we ponder, how will the heavenly bodies bring us a step closer to truth? Can we consider Wovenhand to be solely “Christian music,” or is there something more at work?
David Eugene Edwards: I don’t know what you can consider it. I don’t consider it that—I just consider it music that comes out of me.

There is a strong duality enforcing Wovenhand: You have your father’s influence (motorcycles, lawlessness, freedom) on one side, and your Grandfather’s influence (piety, church community, duty) on the other… where are you on that polarity? Where does current Wovenhand fit on that polarity?
Well, we don’t [laughs]. We don’t fit anywhere. That’s just the way it is. It’s not the goal, and it doesn’t matter if you fit or not. In a lot of ways, I’m too, what people would say, 'churchy,' for the world at large, and I’m much too of the world at large for the church. So I don’t really fit in either, according to any view that anyone holds from both groups. But that’s nothing new—that’s the way it’s always been with what I do. Not that it’s better or anything—it is what it is. I don't try to reconcile any duality. I believe that all things are reconciled already. I don’t need to reconcile anything, I just let the music that comes out, come out, and just speak about the things that are on my mind.

Currently the Standing Rock Sioux in the Dakotas are in the midst of a stand-off with oil companies pushing the DAPL (Dakota Access Pipeline) through their ancestral land, and we are keenly reminded of our disgraceful past and present with the first peoples of this continent. The perennial Native American element appears more prominently than ever before on this latest album. How does that fit in your personal life, and how does it fit in your music?
It’s like living in someone else’s home. To be an American, for me, is like living on someone else’s property or home. The things around you that are part of that home and make up where you are, as of course you’re born into it here, has always been a big part of my life growing up—Native American this and that, family history, local history. It doesn’t mean I’m all directly involved in it, it’s just part of my life. Aesthetically and everything else, I’m living in someone else's place, I’m seeing the things and that’s what surrounds me. That’s what I know. The things that we the people who have taken this place over have to offer, to me, is bullshit. From top to bottom. Whether it is doctors, or Walmarts, or trains. It’s all bullshit. So I just look at the things that are actually of this place and actually have something to do with this place, and put my attention there.

Wovenhand has been embraced by many of an adversarial spiritual bent—for example, multiple members of prominent Satanic metal bands have professed admiration for your work. How does that sit with you to have such an antithetical fan base? What do you think is the attraction?
There’s even been an attraction from the beginning with 16 Horsepower. I think folk music in general is popular with the music [community] you’re talking about, be it from Sweden or Norway, or from Portugal, or wherever. These people dig into the folklore and the culture of where they are coming from, and use that. That’s something that 16 Horsepower did, and what I do now, so that’s a connection. Singing about spiritual things, whether it’s adversarial or not, are spiritual things in general. I identify with the aggressive stance they take against what people say I represent. I would agree with those who are aggressively against something, rather that those who just say, 'Eh, I’d rather just sing about something else.'

Since, like I said, we never really had a home, Wovenhand or 16 Horsepower, we didn’t fit into alternative country even though that’s what we were: it’s folk instruments but those who listen to folk music won’t be interested in what I do. We’ve never had a musical home. But now we’ve been taken in by the metal community, and I’m happy about it. It’s nice to have a place to be[laughs]. All the people I’ve met are all so complimentary and kind and welcoming.

Star Treatment is a thunderous rock 'n' roll album colored with folk, country, and world music, but it’s definitely still a rock album. It seems like your music always will carry that “Denver Sound” pioneered by the collective works of Bob Ferbrache, Slim Cessna, Munly, and anything around Absinthe Studios. Is the newer direction a conscious departure?
Not at all. I always have that in me, but it doesn’t always come out. When I’m playing with the guys I’m playing with now, Chuck French and Neil Keener, they are coming from this heavier world completely. That’s what they bring, and of course I know that. They complement what would be typical Wovenhand stuff, but they also really complement the stuff that I'm doing that is more heavy. It’s easier for us to collaborate. If I stay in that heavy direction it’s easier for us to communicate and make something new.

What can you tell us about the formative days of that blossoming Denver “Gothic Country” movement? I’ve heard whispers of psychedelic infused intensive prayer, engaging in Native American spiritual rituals, and other practices that might be considered unorthodox. Is there any truth to that?
No, there is no truth to that—I don’t know where that would be coming from, really! I go to pow wows all the time with my son all over America: Wyoming, South Dakota, Montana, New Mexico. But I would never even consider entering myself into what they consider sacred. I got no business being there, and I wouldn't do it in the first place. I just like to go and spend my money there with those people. The money that I make, I spend on them. I buy the things they make. That’s how I like to spend my time when I’m not playing music or whatever. But, no, there’s no voodoo [laughs]. But I did do a lot of drugs and all that kinda shit! [Laughs] And that’s voodoo in itself, I guess. But nothing laid out in terms of trying to get somewhere spiritually by doing something like that. I don’t believe in anything like that.

Star Treatment has an expansive, sublime feeling, like gazing at the night sky—stars, heavenly bodies. What forms does this theme take in your mind, and on this record?
They take every shape! That's the point of the record—the stars are everything to us. The heavenly bodies since the beginning of man are what’s above him. These are the lights that light up his life. These are the lights that guide the seasons, and everything else is tied to it. Basically all the religions of the world are astro-religions. They are all based on the stars, the movements of the stars, assigning characters to the stars in the Zodiac. This is a worldwide event, not just in one place but everywhere. People coming up with the same images for what they are seeing in the sky. How that translates into daily life for people. Into art, literature, culture, and, as I said, religion, which is the basis for all of that. There is no escaping it. I just took it head on and started talking about it in very abstract ways. It’s a many layered imagery. It’s very ethereal. Just like the sky.

As we look to the stars and imagine worlds beyond our world, do you ever consider the end of this one? It can be a humbling experience, especially since we’re living in such a volatile and frightening place right now. Are we living in the end times? Is that something you consider?
I’m not so hot on that topic. I don’t think people really know what that means. My worldview is very different from the majority of people I speak to. I don’t believe there are billions and billions and billions of universes. I don’t believe all this. I believe we’re being lied to on a constant basis, for many reasons. The main reasons being money and, well, control. They just feed on whatever the people's fears are and adopt the stories and things to control these people. I believe that all of the universe is centerd around the Earth, not that we all revolve around the Sun or something. I believe that the Sun and everything else revolves around the Earth, and was created for the Earth. The Earth is the center of all things. Whether it’s time for the end or not, that’s beyond my understanding.

But I do believe that it is the center of things, yeah. We’re not just some irrelevant, strung up life form on some planet hurtling 60,000 miles per hour through space with no rhyme or reason. Just hurtling through space and it all just happened to come about? I don’t believe in all that, of course. The Earth to me is central, Man himself and the Creation around him is central to all things—not the stars.

WOVENHAND TOUR 2016:
09/12 COLOGNE, DE @ Gebäude 9 *
09/13 FRANKFURT, DE @ Zoom *
09/15 BERN, CH @ ISC *
09/16 ZURICH, CH @ Bogen F *
09/17 VIENNA, AT @ Flex *
09/18 BUDAPEST, HU @ A38 *
09/20 SALZBURG, AT @ Rockhouse *
09/21 MUNICH, DE @ Ampere *
09/22 LEIPZIG, DE @ UT Connewitz *
09/23 BERLIN, DE @ Heimathafen *
09/24 HAMBURG, DE - Reeperbahn Festival
09/26 ARHUS, DK @ Train *
09/27 OSLO, NO @ John Dee *
09/29 HELSINKI, FI @ Tavastia
09/30 STOCKHOLM, SE @ Nalen *
10/01 LUND, SE @ Mejeriet *
10/02 COPENHAGEN, DK @ Vega Jr. *
10/04 EINDHOVEN, NL @ Effenaar *
10/05 AMSTERDAM, NL @ Melkweg *
10/06 LEUVEN, BE @ Het Depot *
10/07 GENT, BE @ Handelsbeurs *
10/08 CHARLEROI, BE @ L'Eden *
10/10 LILLE, FR @ L'Aéronef *
10/11 PARIS, FR @ La Maroquinerie *
10/13 ORLEANS, FR @ L'Astrolabe *
10/14 GRENOBLE, FR @ La Belle Electrique *
10/15 FEYZIN, FR @ L'Epicerie Moderne *
10/16 TOULOUSE, FR @ La Rex *
10/18 LONDON, UK @ The Dome *

* w/ Emma Ruth Rundle

(via Noisey)
Sargent Housetag:sargenthouse.com,2005:Post/43488852016-08-30T08:47:48-07:002016-08-30T10:34:02-07:00Wovenhand premieres new track "Golden Blossom" on Consequence of Sound

David Eugene Edwards has long brought a uniquely pallpable intensity to his alternative country songs. Even back when he fronted 16 Horsepower, his music was filled with a punishing air of travail and — eventually — redemption. Now as the leader of Wovenhand, Edwards continues on in that tradition with the follow-up to 2014’s Refractory Obdurate, September 9th’s Star Treatment (via Sargent House).

On the album’s latest single, “Golden Blossom”, the band demonstrates how they can take the heaviness of their music and transplant it onto a simple, unabashed love song. The track pounds on straight-forward guitar strumming, delivered with such aggression that it’s almost crushing. Still, the affecting rise of the song’s percussive arc finds a way to become powerfully uplifting, buoyed on by Edwards’ exalting vocals delivering what can only be described as epic poetry. “Oh, blinded by the sun I see/ This light given me,” Edwards sings out. “Crashing into the rock, into the cleft with thee/ No more sun, no more see/ Only he, only we.”

As Edwards himself puts it, rather bluntly, “It is the love song, pure and unabashed. Crashing into the rock.” Take a listen below.

Listen to “Golden Blossom” at Consequence of Sound

Sargent Housetag:sargenthouse.com,2005:Post/43399702016-08-24T09:30:36-07:002016-08-24T12:17:26-07:00Wovenhand releases new song "The Hired Hand" via The AV Club

by David Anthony

David Eugene Edwards isn’t afraid of shifting focus. For 15 years he’s operated under the Wovenhand moniker, a name that’s allowed him to make music that runs the gamut from folky Americana to dark, twisted rock ‘n’ roll. For his latest album, Star Treatment, Edwards recorded at Steve Albini’s iconic Electrical Audio studio with heavyweight metal producer Sandford Parker at the helm, and he was once again joined by Chuck French and Neil Keener, half of Denver post-hardcore greats Planes Mistaken For Stars.

The result is an album that finds Wovenhand rumbling through a batch of songs that find the space between blues-based alt-country and unsettling stoner metal. The A.V. Club is premiering “The Hired Hand” below, which only highlights the fact that Edwards is the best approximation of Nick Cave that America has to offer.

All of Wovenhand’s tour dates, which include an appearance at this weekend’s Psycho Fest in Las Vegas, can be found here.

Click HERE to listen to “The Hired Hand”

Sargent Housetag:sargenthouse.com,2005:Post/43267542016-08-15T16:26:50-07:002017-01-10T06:30:28-08:00"Star Treatment" Pre-orders Up Now

Pre-orders for Wovenhand's newest album, "Star Treatment", are available now including CD & LP bundles with t-shirts at a reduced price.
Click HERE for the US $ Store, which ships worldwide.
Click HERE for the UK £ Store, which ships to UK & EU and offers different shirt designs.Sargent Housetag:sargenthouse.com,2005:Post/42954612016-07-26T08:25:22-07:002016-07-26T11:04:01-07:00Wovenhand premieres "Come Brave" on Stereogum

by Tom Breihan

Wovenhand, the Denver group led by the former 16 Horsepower frontman David Eugene Edwards, have developed their own take on American roots music — one that’s grand and dark and gothic, one that draws on doom metal and postpunk as much as folk or country. You could think of them as a deeper-underground version of Swans or Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds. Two years ago, they released a great album called Refractory Obdurate. And later this year, they’ll follow it up with the new LP Star Treatment. The band recorded the album at Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio studio, with the great Chicago metal producer Sanford Parker behind the boards. And this time around, the band includes Planes Mistaken For Stars members Chuck French and Neil Keener, as well as Crime & The City Solution keyboardist Matthew Smith. Edwards says that it’s a sort of concept album about our human fascination with the night sky. First single “Come Brave” is a vast, dark rager, and it sounds absolutely awesome.

Listen to “Come Brave” at Stereogum

Star Treatment is out September 9th on Sargent House worldwide and Glitterhouse Records in Europe.
Sargent Housetag:sargenthouse.com,2005:Post/41591552016-04-29T08:13:22-07:002016-05-04T19:31:15-07:00New Album and Tour Dates Announced for 2016

If Wolfe was casting spells to bring forth the darkness, Wovenhand’s David Eugene Edwards was tapping into the audiences’ spiritual side. His brand of gothic Americana sounds like tales passed down from generation to generation. The spoken tradition of transference is not enough though. This tale needs roaring guitars and driving percussion. And the only setting fit is a dusty copper butte with nothing else in any direction. A couple of Afghans to sit on. A burning blue flame of a sky. And staring down at you with his arms crossed is Edwards. The arms uncross and in his hand is a chrome old-school microphone wrapped in a red-bandana. And then he begins to preach.

See more photos at Pancakes & Whiskey
Sargent Housetag:sargenthouse.com,2005:Post/38515292015-09-11T14:09:28-07:002015-09-11T16:46:12-07:00Philadelphia Live Show Review

BEING THERE: Wovenhand @ Underground Arts

The rainy late summer evening cast a suitably gloomy pall over last night’s proceedings, but the damp masses in Philly’s Underground Arts created a sorta human humidity that sapped the luster of yours truly. I was there to bear witness to another performance by the tragically but not surprisingly unheralded Denver-based gothic Americana outfit Wovenhand. For the uninitiated please allow me to smarten ya up some: David Eugene Edwards, the wunderkind/visonary behind Wovenhand, has been making haunting, beguiling music in one aggregation or another since 2001. Before Wovenhand, Edwards helmed the awesome mule-kicking combo 16 Horsepower. He is unlike any front man I have seen. Ordinarily he is very private about the personal details of his life but he revealed in the documentary Searching For Wrong Eyed Jesus that his grandfather was a Pentecostal preacher who imbued him, from a young age, with a hellfire and brimstone ideology. This apocalyptic world view is palpably apparent in the music of both 16hp and Wovenhand alike. Which is not to say it’s Christian Rock — far fuckin from it yo — rather it is steeped in a parochial oeuvre. The previous Wovenhand shows I attended were way more rustic and toned down than they were last night at Underground Arts. In my previous encounters with Wovenhand — unmolested by the clusterfuck of gawkers staking out lip-of-the-stage real estate last night to see headliner Chelsea Wolfe — I was able to get close enough to the shamanistic Mr. Edwards to catch him as he went into a state of thrall, eyes rolling about his dome and a barely audible speaking in tongues. I’m carny enough to know a grift when I see it, but the fervor Edwards exhibited seemed genuine as, pardon the cliché, Hell. You don’t have to know the tunes to get the feeling; like salvation, it just washes over you if you let it. Halle-fucking-lujah, canyadigit? The latest incarnation of Wovenhand, enhanced by the inclusion of members of Planes Mistaken For Stars, swings from rustic Appalachian tones to full-on sonic tribal sturm und drang and last night they delivered 60 minutes of sonic gospel. It was a new experience for this acolyte and what it lacked in somber intimacy it more than made up for with majesty and throng. Chelsea Wolfe, though hardly my cup of tea, gets dap from me for taking Wovenhand on tour. Despite the humid overcrowded roomful of her fans (most of whom were politely indifferent and unmoved by WH) it was still revelatory. If ya ain’t down yet, ya should be. Thus sayeth the gospel of Bearer. You’re welcome… and AMEN bitches – PAUL BEARER

(via Phawker)
Sargent Housetag:sargenthouse.com,2005:Post/38485762015-09-09T15:28:00-07:002015-09-09T16:31:54-07:00Live Video // Wovenhand at Saint Vitus - FULL SET

Pit Full Of Shit captured the sold out show at Saint Vitus on September 8, 2015 - watch Wovenhand’s full set now on YouTube.
Sargent Housetag:sargenthouse.com,2005:Post/37908492015-07-24T16:28:46-07:002015-07-24T18:02:45-07:00David Eugene Edwards Interview

The above interview features songs spanning David Eugene Edwards’ career, from 16 Horsepower to Wovenhand, with David discussing inspirations, lyrics, and more over the course of the hourlong program.

Don’t forget that all of Wovenhand’s catalog is available to stream online HERE.
Sargent Housetag:sargenthouse.com,2005:Post/37551582015-06-25T15:55:56-07:002015-06-25T19:34:24-07:00The Farm Family // Live In London photoset

Another spectacular and genre-bending band to wow the audience in the main stage was Wovenhand, who were as close to a headliner as you can get with a line-up like this Monday. This magnificent dark folk band fronted by David Eugene Edwards sounds as if someone managed to convert the American Gothic painting to music. After their stunning performance in 2011, we didn’t think they could do any better – we have never been quite so happy to be proven wrong. Playing mostly from their latest and heavier albums, the band performed with more energy than ever before, but with the same humility that brings them even closer to our hearts. Edwards may say that they “are out of [their] league,” but we know that there are few bands that can rival the show that Wovenhand gave us.

...After a short intermission, the time had come for the Colorado Cowboys from Wovenhand to come forth to the stage. The lights dimmed down and out came the magnificent 4, with frontman David Eugene Edwards looking as serious as ever, sporting his signature brimmed hat. The set kicked off with the rockin' riffage of "Good Shepherd" off of the bands' latest album, Refractory Obdurate, prominently played during the course of the evening. With their latest album, the bands' sound shifted towards a louder, heavier sound with a more prominent use of distorted guitars, a sound that the quartet decided to adopt for every song on the setlist, old as in new, offering a freshly revised rendition of some older tracks. This came as quite a surprise to me at first, and I was absolutely blown away by how heavy they were compared to their more acoustic-driven studio recordings. The vocals also received a fairly different treatment compared to the studio records, David Eugene Edwards' deep, soulful voice going through a band-pass filter centered on the medium frequencies to give a strong low-fi radio distortion quality to the sound. Strangely enough, I would say that some of the amped up renditions of the older tracks added an interesting post-punk vibe to the songs, as if Joy Division had gotten into a time machine and landed up in the dusty old' wild, wild west, at the time of cowboys and Indians. In terms of overall sound, the mix was absolutely stellar, near-flawless, with yet another thick, punchy kick drum sound combined with an intense bass guitar tone that was both loud and heavy while retaining crystal clarity on each and every note. The guitars and vocals fitted the overall sound impeccably and every instrument stayed intelligible during the entirety of the set.

Occasionally some of the songs would mark some downtime, with the whole instrumentation taking a step back and leaving the spotlight to frontman David Edwards' haunting voice and his immense charisma to shine through in its full radiance. Over a steady tambourine beat, the man seemed to grow deeper and deeper into a trance, waving a few hand and head gestures in between guitar strokes like an apache chief, captivating the whole audience with his aura and charisma. I would occasionally wake back to my senses only to realize that 5 full minutes had flown by, having been completely sucked into the frontman's shamanic trance, channeling the spirits from beyond. After finishing up their set with the climactic "Salome", the band returned for an encore with "Glistening black". Wovenhand then stepped off stage, the lights and P.A music came back on, signaling that this magnificent evening had come to close... Or did it really? While some audience members walked away, a good deal of the front row started cheering for what seemed to be a hopeless plea for yet another encore. 5 minutes went by and finally David Edwards stepped back onto the stage to our great surprise, armed with his antique mandolin, and proceeded to play breathtaking, 13 minute solo cover of Bob Dylan’s' "As I went out one Morning". A terrific way to end the evening.

As an avid concert-goer, I dare say that I've seen quite a number over the years, but nights like these only come around come around rarely. After a performance such as these, one can only leave the show desperate for more from both of these bands. For all of them lucky Hellfest 2015 ticket holders, Wovenhand will be bringing their show to the Valley on Friday. As to Marriages, one can only hope the band comes back quickly for another set of European dates. So far this gig easily reaches my top 3 concerts of 2015.

...Somewhere in there, it would’ve made sense to have dinner. I did not. No time. Wovenhand would be on the Main Stage shortly, and I knew that was where I wanted to be. It was a return appearance for them and the second time I’d have seen them at Roadburn – never seen them anywhere else, come to think of it — but as I consider the set they played in 2011 a personal landmark, as in, “before I saw it” and “after I saw it,” I’d been very much anticipating their arrival. They were headliners this time along with Eyehategod, who’d play the Main Stage afterwards, but Wovenhand had the longer set, and put their 80 minutes to use in the most dynamic manner I saw all day, frontman David Eugene Edwards far to the left side of the stage while drummer Ordy Garrison had the middle, and guitarist/backing vocalist Chuck French and bassist Neil Keener anchored the right. Edwards is among the more charismatic stage presences I’ve ever seen, and though he said before they ended that they knew they were “out of their league” in coming back to Roadburn, I felt more like I was out of mine watching them.

Last year’s Refractory Obdurate (review here) featured prominently in their set, which opened with “Hiss,” arguably their heaviest work to-date. Ultimately, it would be a much different kind of intensity they brought than four years ago, when Edwards, seated, laid bare a deeply spiritual — religious, Christian — neo-folk, worldly in its arrangements and deeper than the eye could follow. Standing, the vocalist/guitarist still had a feather in his hat and still taunted or teased the audience in a kind of war-whoop, but he also softshoed while he played, and Wovenhand this time around was a much more stripped-down, rawer, meaner-toned outfit. Garrison‘s drums, aided now and then by some extra percussion by French, were a driving force, and the seething energy of their rhythm could be felt throughout the main hall, whether they happened to be raging at the time, as in “Hiss,” or engaged in a more quiet brooding, à la “Closer” from 2012’s The Laughing Stalk (review here). Opener “Long Horn” from that album was also a highlight, and I was amazed what a few years could do for band like that progressing in unexpected ways and pursuing different avenues of sound. “Good Shepherd” lacked nothing for its melody, but even that had a coinciding element of pummel.

It was to the point where, I knew I wanted to see Monolord. I’d wanted to see Monolord all along, and they were playing Het Patronaat at the same time Wovenhand were on the Main Stage — Roadburn giveth and Roadburn scheduleth conflicteth. I left Wovenhand and went down the block to the other venue just as Monolord were going on. How heavy were they? They were superlatively heavy. A monumental sonic impact that seemed to hit all at once, as though the guitar and bass were also kick drums. It was ridiculous, and the line outside the Patronaat was backed up the longest I’d seen it yet to get in, but as I stood there and watched them, I couldn’t take the fact that Wovenhand were playing Roadburn and I wasn’t in the same room where it was happening. Monolord slayed the place, absolutely. I saw people coming out of there when they were done and they looked even more in a daze than usual. But me, I had to back and watch Wovenhand finish. They were too good to let it pass. And when they were done, they came back out and did an encore. Fucking a.

"Refractory Obdurate is Edwards’ “heavy record”, with tumescent electric guitars and unforgiving drums, howled lines and massive codas. The album finally makes good on the post-punk and metal influences that have forever lingered at the edges of Wovenhand’s output." - see full review at Pitchfork

"There’s no twang in frontman David Eugene Edwards’s voice; instead, he’s got a grand and faraway carnival-barker wail that reminds me, just slightly, of one of his past tourmates, Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan. There’s some Gira in there, too, and some Birthday Party-era Nick Cave, and some late-Lungfish Daniel Higgs, and some recent-vintage Mark Lanegan. At a certain point, though, you stop mentally breaking the songs on this album down into their component parts, into possible genres or influences, and you just let them wash over you and fill you up." - see full review at Stereogum

Refractory Obdurate is one of the most unique records you are likely to hear all year. Give this one a chance and you will be won over by its odd mixtures of sound and dark meditations of faith. It’s heavy in ways that go beyond the guitar, bass, and drums. - see full review on Verbicide Magazine

To see Refractory Obdurate by neo-folkie David Eugene Edwards released on a label known primarily for hardcore is still a strange maneuver. But it makes sense. Intentionally or not, his work in Wovenhand slots in with the forward-thinking bands like Deafheaven and Self Defense Family that Deathwish has been releasing lately. For the new audience sure to pick up on his apocalyptic Christian tunes, Refractory is a fantastic entrance point, a gut punch of a rock album that layers his typical mandolin-banjo strums with distorted guitars and a pummeling rhythm section. I never expected to say this, but it kicks ass.
- see full review at CVLT Nation

"I don’t believe in God, but I have complete faith in Wovenhand lead singer and songwriter David Eugene Edwards. Which is alarming, because Refractory Obdurate sounds a clamorous warning that something is nigh. Rather than a direct message, Edwards offers only a shatter of brimstone pieces; but take my word, we’re talking some cataclysmic shit. - see full review at Consequence of Sound

"Refractory Obdurate fully displays every strength Edwards and crew have to give, and from the beginning of the first track you understand you are in for a experience. One of the things that Wovenhand does so well is create heavy music without being abrasive, and soft music without being mellow.
