Saudade – “Lions” (Feat. Randall Blythe & Lee “Scratch” Perry) // Stereogum

Chuck Doom’s Saudade collective is an exercise in smashing together disparate talents in service of dark experimental music. The core lineup includes members of Bad Brains and Cro-Mags but also Medeski Martin & Wood. They’ve shared jazzy instrumentals, moody heaviness with Chino Moreno and Chelsea Wolfe, and a dub track with goth-punk-rap marauders Ho99o9. And now they’ve brought together another unexpected pair of artists.

“Lions,” the new Saudade track out today, features both Lamb Of God vocalist Randy Blythe (credited here as Randall Blythe) and the legendary dub producer Lee “Scratch” Perry. It’s heavy as hell, with lots of abrasive screaming from Blythe — who also guested with Deafheaven a few years back — and a metallic guitar solo to carry us home. Blythe begins by singing, “Honey dripping through the ceiling/ On the shifting blue below/ Their beauty stings in floating dreams/ That let the poison flow.”
